Product information :
Lamps like WaterLight and Salt lamps use water and salt to generate light without electricity or batteries. These lamps work through electrolysis and ionization, where a saline solution acts as an electrolyte and two electrodes immersed in the solution conduct an electric current. The movement of ions and electrons creates an electric current, which is converted into light using energy-efficient LED technology.

Size Information:
Pour in a cup or so of cool water, fill the attached paper cup with about a tablespoon of table salt, pour into the water, shake it, and turn on the light. It stays on for days. If the light dims, shake up the water. When done, dump out the salty water and rinse it out, then let it dry.
They say shelf life is five years. The leds are bright white. The whole thing stays cool, and there are no fumes I can detect. The package says the "battery" produces 100ma, which is quite a lot.
Absolutely worth having for camping, power outages, whatever.
Though the listing photo shows two salt packages there is none included (and the listing does actually say that on closer inspection). Instead there's a flimsy little paper funnel thing that you can use to scoop salt into the back. The setup process is very easy and it works flawlessly.
You simply add regular salt to it (the package says it includes salt, but a sticker confirms there is none in the pack), add water to the fill line, seal and shake the bag, let it sit a couple of minutes, then turn the light on. In an emergency - when water was being conserved - the package also confirms you can use urine.
It also comes with a non-adjustable strap, that attaches with plastic karabiners to two holes on the top of the bag. This allows you to hang it from a convenient location, instead of just propping it up.
I'll be interested to see if it works on one of my field trips just by pouring in some seawater.
One fantastic thing about this, is that it's reusable and not one time use only. So if the power goes out for an extended period of time, and you need to use this, when this runs out of its own natural power, just give it a good rent, put them the correct amount of salt and water, wait about when the 2 minutes and voila, you're back in business with more light. Although it's not a replacement for a flashlight, it will give you enough light to see what you're doing with your immediate surroundings. Keep in mind when ordering this, you only receive one light. So if you have a family, make sure you order one for each person. Likewise, you could order several of these, and place them along the floor to light up a path to see where you're going and what you're doing.
Another fantastic plus about this, is there's no expiration date. So you could add this to a prepper kit and not have to worry about it expiring.
- The lamp can be filled with 15-30 grams of salt and offer enough lumens to light up a small room (bedroom or bathroom). It is about the same amount of light as a cellphone light.
- The description says it will offer 144 to 200 hours of lighting! That is 6 to 8 continuous days of light. In my test the lamp shined bright for 11 days straight!
- For an emergency, this light pays for itself. It is lightweight (3.4 ounces) and doesn’t take up much space in a pack. Its only downside is that it needs to stay upright as a small airhole can let water leak if turned upside down. Even with that, it makes for a bright camp lantern.
- Though no salt was included, there was a collapsible paper cup for measuring the 15 to 30 grams of salt necessary to run the lamp.
- Flushing the salt out is easy and turning the bag upside down allows it to drain and dry for long-term storage.
- This would make a great gift for any outdoor enthusiast or student. It is also fantastic for emergency or storm preparation.
The above review is for VKOSHA’s saltwater lamp.
We were way more impressed with this than I’d expected to be. It’s not flashlight bright (other than a pretty small flashlight), but if you had an emergency it would work well – and without batteries. The light is built right into a heavy duty, zipping plastic bag. It will stand up on its own and comes with a strap for hanging it. Operation is simple: add water to an obvious line on the bag, add 15-30grams of salt (a bit more a tablespoon full for the low end), shake and wait a couple of minutes. Ours is already cleaned, dried and in our hurricane supplies as a backup to lots of other backups.
Quality: 5/5
Love the concept, the materials and the functionality.
Value: 4/5
For the price point you can get a decent flashlight with more features, but if like a bit quirky ways to prepare for extreme events, this is pretty cool, but it’s not something we’ll be buying in bulk. If you’re minimally prepared for significant events (hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes,...) where power may be out for a few weeks this is probably overkill, but if you’re desperately seeking a light that could work for years after zombies have overrun the earth, all batteries have been consumed, and all solar chargers are lost…you’re come to the right place (and you should think 5/5).
Packaging: 5/5
Minimal impact to the environment and my wallet. Nothing wasted, overdone, or over embellished at my expense.
First impressions: It looks just like a bag with an led and a switch on the side. The kit says there is salt included but it’s not included. There is a cardboard measuring cup inside and you have to use your own salt.
Installation/setup: Open bag, add salt and water. Shake. Wait 2 minutes and turn on switch for light.
Final thoughts: It really works and gave off more light than I expected. The light isn’t real bright, but it’s plenty if you have none. I plan to add this to my disaster kit, it will come in handy since it doesn’t matter what kind of water. Dirty water, salt water, even pee. I rinsed mine out and it says all I need is some more salt and water to make it work again after it dries out.
⭐️1 star - I don't recommend it at all, poor quality.
⭐️⭐️ 2 stars - I don't recommend it, it has multiple faults, or a very high price.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 stars - It's passable, It has some faults but the quality is ok for what it is.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars - Product quite acceptable, it does what it promises.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars - Product that I totally recommend.
While it may not possess the "power of the sun" level brightness, in a prolonged power outage situation -- one of the main concerns that I have (whether by natural or manmade EMP, a hacking of the grid, etc.) -- this would provide plenty to serve as the difference between being in the pitch darkness and actually being able to see where you're going, being able to read, having lighting to play games, etc. With only moderate use, after the sun goes down and there's no more natural light left, it will provide light for a long, long time.
Note that it does not include salt (they really should include a couple of small cheap-o fast food style salt packets or something...that couldn't possibly add much to the manufacturer's cost of this), so next time you're at a restaurant or fast food place that has some little salt packets, take a couple and keep with this so that you know you'll have it when you need it.
With just a few teaspoons of salt and some water you’ve got a light that will work for hundreds of hours. I plan on packing this emergency light with a baggie of salt for camping trips as it is very bright and convenient for leaving or hanging in an area at the periphery of your campsite. I’m sure it will also be useful for adding a little light to a room or hallway in the event that your power goes out at night. If the company can figure out how to make “WATTer” lights made of glass that are lantern styled with warm white bulbs and an area that can be easily accessed/cleaned to replace the salt water, I would get a bunch for my house.
This is a good solid brine light that works well. I recommend this product. It's great for emergencies or camping alike.
This lamp uses salt water as the electrolyte for the battery. You just take it out of the box and put a little bit of saltwater in it and shake it up. Wait a second and flip the switch and boom, you have light.
You can remove the saltwater from the pouch, rinse it with fresh water and let it dry and reuse it at a later date.
I have many pounds of salt put away (amongst many other food & water storage), so finding a pinch to get this light going is no worry at all. It doesn't include salt, so might be a good idea for you to throw a small bag inside the box -- then all you'll need is a little water and that's it!
It may not possess the "power of the sun" level brightness, but when it's pitch black inside the house, any degree of light is better than no light at all.
Very cool item, love it!
I like the fact that it is reusable. I like that it runs on saltwater, so it has a low environmental impact. I like that you can use it for 7 days. Perfect addition to my emergency pack. We will take this with us if we plan on a long hike as well that could possibly reach sunset. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
